See hunger cues in pictures. Frequent feeding is normal when your baby is first born. Baby may feed as often as every 1 to 2 hours. After the newborn period, your baby should be feeding at least 8 times in 24 hours including during the nighttime.

Hunger cues
Rather than watching the clock, watch for cues that your baby is hungry. Early feeding cues (signs) are the best time to feed!
Early cues
"I’m hungry" (stirring, mouth opening, turning head and seeking/rooting).
Mid cues
"I’m really hungry" (stretching, increasing physical movement, hand to mouth).
Late cues
"Calm me, then feed me" (crying, agitated body movements, colour turning red).
